RCA ITALIANA

A major record company, and probably the most important in Italy, for the purposes of these discographies RCA Italiana has a special role, as they released directly or indirectly, through their subsidiaries, many influential Italian rock and prog albums of the late 60's and early 70's.

Il Balletto di Bronzo (with their ultrarare first album Sirio 2222), Il Rovescio della Medaglia, The Trip, had many of their records released on the typical turquoise blue label.

But RCA Italiana also had a lot of minor labels connected, starting from Numero Uno (see their separate page/discography) with Arc, It, Help, Radio, Erre, Spaghetti and many more.

Founded in Rome around 1951 under the protective wing of Vatican, and with its historical headquarters (also including the well-known recording studios) on the Via Tiburtina, the popular record company closed around 1990, becoming part of the Bertelsmann BMG group.
Many of the albums listed here have been reissued during the 80's on vinyl, keeping the original artworks but being easily recognisable by different catalogue numbers. Most of them are also available on CD.

The typical RCA Italiana label had the same design of any other 70's RCA label in the world, but with a distinctive turquoise background.
RCA logo in white letters is on the left, rotated 90°, with a horizontal "Italiana" writing on the right half of the label. Before this, until 1967-68 the label was black with silver logo and lettering.

Standard orange label RCA Victor releases were normally issued in Italy at the time, in the list above there are just a few particular or Italian-only releases on this label.

Unusually for a major label, white label promo copies abound, and in some cases are as common (or as rare, if you prefer) as the standard copies.

Some LP's issued in 1973 contained a small card (approx.14,5x9,8 cm.) with a sentence by Marcel Proust about popular music, among these were Festa Mobile/Diario di viaggio della Festa Mobile, Rovescio della Medaglia/Contaminazione, Rustichelli e Bordini/Opera prima, Perigeo/Abbiamo tutti un blues da piangere and Maurizio Monti/L'amore).

Singles had the same design as the albums of the same period.

Late 80's reissues have a darker turquoise background, but the overall design is similar to earlier labels.
